Visit Application

Description

MapView is a web-based geological mapping application developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in collaboration with the Association of American State Geologists (AASG) as part of the National Geologic Map Database (NGMDB). This interactive platform allows users to explore and visualize geological maps across North America, displaying over 27,000 geological maps and reports that can be filtered by scale, map type (bedrock, surficial, or selected geological maps), author, agency, and publication year. The application features a comprehensive map interface showing detailed geological formations with different colors representing various rock types, ages, and geological structures, while providing access to both historical and recent geological surveys, open-file reports, and scientific investigations from state geological surveys and federal agencies. Users can search by location, examine detailed geological cross-sections, access full citations and metadata for each map, and download geological data in various formats, making it an essential tool for geologists, researchers, educators, environmental consultants, and anyone interested in understanding the geological foundation and history of specific regions across the United States and parts of Canada.
