OpenEnviroMap: New Mexico Wetlands Inventory and Mapping System

Visit Application

Description

OpenEnviroMap is a comprehensive Geographic Information System (GIS)-based web application developed by the New Mexico Environment Department that provides interactive mapping and data visualization tools. The application serves as a centralized platform for accessing critical environmental data layers with different versions focusing on specific data. This version of OpenEnviroMap provides data relating to wetland ecosystems across New Mexico and surrounding southwestern states. The interactive platform features an extensive legend system with multiple data layers including NM Wetlands Mapping and Classification, various habitat types (riparian, aquatic invertebrate, fish habitat), hydrogeomorphic mapping classifications, and specialized categories such as palustrine formations, carbon sequestration areas, groundwater recharge zones, and wildlife habitats. Users can toggle between different map views, query specific data layers, and examine detailed wetland characteristics through color-coded polygons and linear features that represent different wetland types, water body positions, nutrient transformation areas, and bank stabilization zones. The tool serves as a valuable resource for environmental scientists, land managers, and researchers to assess wetland distribution, monitor ecosystem health, plan conservation efforts, and support regulatory decision-making related to wetland protection and restoration across the region.
