Pecos Slope Groundwater Explorer: From Mountains to Artesian Basin

Visit Application

Description

The Pecos Slope Groundwater Explorer is an interactive story map that provides a comprehensive visual exploration of the complex hydrogeological systems in southeastern New Mexico's Pecos River region. This educational tool combines detailed geological maps, 3D subsurface visualizations, and extensive well data to illustrate how groundwater flows from the Sacramento Mountains eastward through multiple aquifer systems, including the Permian Aquifer System and the Pecos Valley Alluvial Aquifer, which together support the agricultural communities of Roswell, Artesia, and surrounding areas. The story map effectively demonstrates the relationship between surface geology and subsurface water resources, showing how different rock formations - from ancient Permian limestones and evaporites to recent alluvial deposits - control groundwater movement and quality, while highlighting critical concepts such as the artesian nature of the Roswell Basin and the interconnected relationship between groundwater and the Pecos River ecosystem that supports endangered species like the Pecos Bluntnose Shiner.
