Water Sustainability in the Pecos Valley

Description

Water Sustainability in the Pecos Valley tells the story of how a collaborative approach is preserving the Roswell Artesian Basin for future generations through the work of the Pecos Valley Artesian Conservancy District (PVACD). This interactive story map explores the historical background of the basin, which has been the foundation of the Pecos Valley's prosperity since early settlers in the 1900s first tapped into what seemed like inexhaustible underground water reservoirs. Under the leadership of Aron Balok, PVACD Superintendent, the district has implemented innovative conservation measures including well metering to track water usage, agricultural water caps with tiered pricing systems, and land retirement programs to reduce overall aquifer demand. The application demonstrates how farmers, municipalities, and conservationists came together to adopt these landmark measures, turning the tide on declining water levels that once threatened this vital resource supporting agriculture, industry, and local communities across southeastern New Mexico. Looking ahead, PVACD's vision focuses on expanding smart irrigation systems, strengthening data-driven policies, and building community awareness to ensure a balanced approach that maintains water availability for generations while supporting continued economic growth in the region.
